Best Gold IRA Companies in 2026
Last verified September 13, 2026.
The best gold IRA depends on what you are buying: the metal, or the service. A low-cost allocated platform IRA wins on total cost, low minimums, and published pricing, and it leads our ranking. A full-service dealer wins when you want a dedicated representative to handle the rollover paperwork, and you pay more per ounce for that help. No company wins both, and the ranking below is computed from our rubric, not hand-picked.
How we ranked: we score every company on total cost, minimums, transparency, IRA terms, storage, sales pressure, concierge support, and product breadth, from published data only, and we take no payment from any company here. See our methodology. Two companies (Augusta and American Hartford Gold) publish no single-figure fees we can score, so they are listed unscored rather than guessed.
What actually separates a gold IRA
Three numbers decide most of it, and only some companies publish all three.
- The account minimum. It ranges from $0 at the low-cost platforms to $50,000 at the high-touch dealers. This eliminates more options than anything else.
- The annual IRA cost. The custodian and depository fees are usually a separate company’s charge, and only some dealers publish them. A platform that charges a flat annual fee, or a percentage of the balance, is easy to compare; a dealer that quotes fees only by phone is not.
- The coin markup. This is the number that matters most and the one almost nobody publishes. It is the premium over spot you pay on the metal itself, and it dwarfs the annual fee. We never state a markup we cannot source, and neither should any list you read.
Where each company wins and loses
- The low-cost platform IRA (OWNx in our data) publishes its full fee schedule, sets a $0 account minimum, and charges a flat annual fee. It wins total cost, minimums, transparency, and low-pressure sales. It loses concierge service and product breadth: there is no dedicated rep, and no numismatic coins.
- The concierge dealers (Goldco, Birch) win on hand-holding, a dedicated representative, and rollover support, which is real value at a higher minimum. Goldco publishes its recurring fees and a $25,000 minimum, which is unusually transparent for a dealer; it also settled a $2 million class action in 2026 over unwanted marketing texts, which is worth knowing before you give out your number.
- Read the fine print on buyback promises. No dealer can legally guarantee it will repurchase your metal, or at what price. Augusta states this plainly in its own FAQ.
- One company carries a heavier record. Lear Capital settled with the New York Attorney General for $6 million in 2022 over commissions it failed to disclose, largely to elderly customers, and filed Chapter 11 the same year. Both are matters of public record, linked below. We rank it on the same rubric as everyone else and let the record speak.
Segment awards
Each award names the rubric dimensions that decide it. The winning company inside each is resolved from the scores.
| Segment | Winning category | Deciding dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Best low-cost gold IRA | Allocated platform | Total cost, pricing transparency, IRA terms |
| Best low-minimum gold IRA | Allocated platform | Minimums, total cost |
| Best concierge and rollover support | Full-service dealer | Concierge, IRA terms, sales experience |
| Most transparent dealer pricing | Full-service dealer | Pricing transparency |
Decide in three steps
- Do you want the cheapest IRA, or a person to run the rollover for you? If cost, a low-minimum allocated platform IRA wins. If hand-holding, a concierge dealer earns its higher price.
- How much are you starting with? Under a few thousand dollars, the high-minimum dealers are out. A platform with a $0 minimum is not.
- Before you fund anything, get the total first-year cost in writing, including the coin markup, not just the annual account fee. If a company will not put the markup in writing, that is your answer.
FAQ
What is the cheapest gold IRA? A low-minimum allocated platform IRA, which charges a flat or percentage annual fee and no coin premium beyond spot. The ranking above computes the lowest-cost option from published fees.
Do I need $25,000 to open a gold IRA? No. Some dealers set minimums that high, but allocated platform IRAs open with as little as $0. The minimum is set by the company, not by the IRS.
Are gold IRAs a scam? The product is legitimate, but the sector has real enforcement history. Regulators have acted on dealers that charged markups so large a buyer could never profit. The defense is simple: get the markup in writing and compare it, which is why we rank on published cost.
Can a gold IRA company guarantee to buy my metal back? No. No dealer can legally guarantee a repurchase or a price. Treat any buyback promise as a commitment to make a market, not a fixed price.
